During a time when activities for children are limited as a result of COVID restrictions, we are thrilled to be able to offer mentees the chance to experience the joy of music. Not only do music lessons teach children rhythm and movement and how to read sheet music, they provide an alternative way to learn important life lessons. While Compass Music and Arts instructor Kim Hewitt teaches the mentees the basics of playing the piano, they are also learning how to:
- set short and long-term goals
- commit to building character
- focus on self-improvement
Thanks to a generous donation from Michael Shank, who serves on the boards of Safer Society Foundation and Compass Music and Arts Foundation, mentees in New Circle Mentoring program have begun to truly enjoy the power of music through their piano lessons. Introductory lesson books were also donated by Mr. Shank directly from Brandon’s very own community-supported independent bookstore, The Bookstore!
