Irene Recovery Information

The offices of Safer Society Foundation and Safer Society Press were severely damaged by flooding related to Hurricance Irene. We are currently unable to access our offices and are working remotely to the extent possible until we can locate temporary office space. At this time, only a few titles are available for purchase. These titles are: Pathways, 4th Edition; Pathways, 3rd Edition; Footprints; Roadmaps to Recovery; The Road to Freedom; and the Adult Relapse Prevention Workbook. As additional titles become available, we will list them here and reactivate them on our web store.

We are not able to offer referrals at this time. We hope to be able to do so again sometime next week (the week of September 5th). We are not able to receive phone calls or faxes. To reach us, please e-mail info@safersociety.org or reach us via the US Postal Service at P.O. Box 340, Brandon, VT 05733-0340.

As additional information becomes available, we will post updates on this page. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we recover from this disaster.

September 20, 2011 Update

It’s been a busy three weeks for all of us at Safer Society. We’re making good progress towards restoring normal operations with a lot of support from our local community and some good luck. Here’s a look at what we’ve been dealing with post-Irene.

The front of the building

This is the looking at the front of our building from Route 7. You can see that the upper parking area was partially washed away, the broken plate glass window on the left, and the gap between the front door and the street. Access is definitely a problem!

The missing foundation

This is the corner of the foundation that washed down the hill. We used to receive books and do daily shipments from the overhead door that is now hanging in space. You can also see that some of the warehouse contents moved out of the building as well.

The road to our parking lot

This is the road that led to our lower parking area, and where UPS came to make the daily pick up. Now it’s just a jumble of rocks, cement, and other debris left behind by Irene.

We have found new office and warehouse space in Brandon, and have spent last week moving in and getting our computers set up and operational again. We’ve also got one phone line in our new space as a temporary measure while we wait to have all of our phone system moved. (No fax service yet.) Here’s a look at the move to the new space and our current office.
Steve and volunteers rescuing equipment from 8 Conant Square

We were able to save a great deal more inventory and equipment than we originally anticipated. Steve Zeoli, our marketing and sales director, and some volunteers are moving equipment from the second floor. The town built the temporary bridge over the chasm to give us access. Help from the community has been very important in our speedy recovery.

Our new office space is in this building

This is The Granary where our new office space is located. We share the building with a number of artists and a couple of professionals, all of whom have made us feel very welcome. Our office windows are on the first floor to the right of the door.

We’re sharing office space with the inventory

We don’t have a dedicated space for inventory and shipping in the new space. Each staff member has a corner, and the inventory gets the middle. Maybe not the ideal arrangement, but it allows us to provide services and become operational again. We’re glad to be getting situated.

Available Books

Most of our titles are available at this time. Titles that we don’t have any copies of or that we have only a few copies of are not available for ordering on our web site. If the title you’re interested in doesn’t show up on the web store, give us a call at 802-247-3132 and we can tell you if we have a copy available. We’re working to get all of the titles back in stock. Some we’ll have within the next couple of weeks, while a few others will be out of stock for a longer period of time because of the need to reprint rather than just re-order.

Referrals

We can do referrals by e-mail at this time, or by regular mail. The best way to get a referral is to e-mail info@safersociety.org. In the e-mail, include the following information:

  • the state for which you’re requesting treatment providers
  • the age and gender of the person for whom treatment is being sought
  • if you’re requesting information about community-based or residential treatment programs

Please do not use the referral form at this time. When the information in form is forwarded to us, your e-mail address does not get included. If you need us to send you the referral via postal service, please call us at 802-247-3132 and give us your address and the state for which you need a referral. We cannot fax referrals at this time because of the limited phone service. When our phone service is completely restored, we’ll be able to fax again.

Contacting Us

Limited phone service has been restored. We have only one phone line, so if you get a busy signal when you call, please try again. The number to use is 802-247-3132. We cannot be contacted by fax until the complete phone system is moved. We can also be contacted via e-mail at info@safersociety.org. Our mailing address remains the same: P.O. Box 340, Brandon, VT 05733-0340.

October 4, 2011 Update

Our recovery continues, although it is more slow now that some of the immediate issues have been addressed. Our old office building has been stabilized by the addition of a crib under the corner where the foundation washed away and a beam and supports mid-building on the lower level. The window at the front of the building is boarded over and some supports have been added behind it. We’re still waiting for the road around the building to be fixed before additional work can be done. The structural engineer has completed a more detailed inspection of the building so that we can start to request estimates and bids for the needed restoration work.

Shipping

We can once again ship UPS, so orders containing more than one book are being sent via UPS Ground. One book orders continue to be sent via the U.S. Postal Service’s Priority Mail. As always, if you should need different shipping arrangements, please give us a call at 802-247-3132 to discuss your specific needs.

Fax Service

We are still waiting for the telephone company to move all of our phone lines to our new location. Until this happens, we do not have fax service. Please continue to contact us via e-mail or phone.

With the help of our printers and suppliers, we have received replacement inventory for several more titles. The following titles are now available on both our webstore and by phone or mail orders:

Orders Placed Between August 25th and September 16th

If you placed an order with us between August 25th and September 16th, and you have not yet received your order or have not been in contact with us about this order, please call or e-mail Steve Zeoli. (802-247-3132 or steve@safersociety.org)  Because of our inability to access stock, we were forced to cancel all orders placed in approximately this date range. We have attempted to contact the affected customers, but we may have missed some people. Steve can tell you whether your order is in our system and which books are available for immediate shipment. We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers.

October 12th Update

Most of our technical issues have been resolved. Our phone lines have been moved to our new location, so we can talk with multiple people and send and receive faxes again. We have also received a few more titles from our printer and can ship them immediately. Here’s the details.

Telephone and Fax

All of our regular numbers are once again operational. Please call us at 802-247-3132 or fax us at 802-247-4233. We can again offer referrals via fax for those who prefer to get the information in that form. We can also use the referral fax form found on the website. We thank you for your patience and understanding while we have worked to get our entire system operational again.

Referral Service

Referrals are available via e-mail and fax, or by regular mail for those without access to the other options. You may request a referral by e-mail, by using the fax referral form on the website, or by calling 802-247-3132.
